Germany is demanding that Iran immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz

During a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called on Tehran to stop blocking the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The head of German diplomacy emphasized the need to resolve the crisis in the Middle East exclusively through negotiations.

He wrote about this on social media.

Wadeful stressed that Germany, as a close ally of the U.S., shares a common goal: Iran must completely abandon its nuclear weapons program under the supervision of international inspectors. Berlin considers the blockade of the strait, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supplies passes, an unacceptable move that destabilizes the global economy.

The conversation took place on Sunday, May 3, amid growing tensions in the region and the confrontation between the U.S. and Iran. Germany advocates for the resumption of diplomatic pressure to avoid further military escalation. Currently, Tehran continues to use its control over the strait as a tool for political blackmail. Thus, Germany’s position remains firm regarding compliance with international law and freedom of navigation.

Iran has announced plans for strict control over the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil passes. Ships from “hostile countries” may be allowed passage only after paying compensation.

The Iranian government has decided to cut oil production due to the U.S. naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, which has significantly limited its trade capabilities. At the same time, Tehran was prepared in advance for developments following this scenario.
