The Hungarian Prosecutor's Office is investigating Orbán's role in the scandal surrounding Oschadbank
The Hungarian prosecutor’s office is investigating the possible involvement of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and a number of high-ranking officials in the case involving the detention of Ukrainian cash transporters from Oschadbank. This investigation concerns events that have already been unofficially dubbed the “golden convoy” and have caused a political stir.
The investigation in Hungary into the detention of Ukrainian cash transporters from Oschadbank has reached a stage where the names of former top state officials, including Viktor Orbán, have emerged, according to the 444.hu portal, citing documents from the prosecutor’s office. The investigative materials list individuals whose potential criminal liability is being examined as part of a case involving unlawful deprivation of liberty and abuse of official authority.
Among those mentioned are former State Secretary Orsz Farkas, former director of the Anti-Terrorism Center János Hajdu, and former Tax and Customs Service official Tamás Demeter. According to the document, some of these individuals—including Farkas and Hajdu—may potentially be questioned as suspects, since they were present at the operational headquarters during the detention of the Ukrainian cash collectors and coordinated the relevant actions.
Journalists contacted the Hungarian Prosecutor General’s Office to request confirmation of the document’s authenticity, and the office did not deny it, effectively acknowledging its authenticity. At the same time, the prosecutor’s office emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and any speculation regarding its progress or potential suspects could influence the evidentiary process.
The statement also emphasizes that the case is in the pre-trial investigation phase, and significant results may emerge in the near future, which will be announced separately. For now, however, official authorities are refraining from further comment, citing the need to maintain procedural confidentiality. This is reported in a publication by the 444.hu portal.
Prior to this, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar commented on the findings of a local media investigation into the March events related to the operation against Ukrainian cash-in-transit guards and Oschadbank property. According to him, former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán may have been personally involved in the decision-making process.
The foreign ministers of Ukraine and Hungary, Andriy Sibiga and Anita Orbán, held their first face-to-face meeting on May 22. During the talks in Helsingborg, the parties agreed to hold a second round of expert-level consultations next week to further discuss bilateral issues.
Earlier, the Hungarian government commented on the massive attack by Russian drones on Zakarpattia, during which the region’s critical infrastructure was targeted. Officials in Budapest described the situation in the border region as extremely alarming and announced that they were preparing urgent countermeasures.
