Norway has restricted protection for Ukrainians: men aged 18–60 will lose their collective status

The Norwegian government has changed the rules for admitting displaced persons from Ukraine: newly arrived men between the ages of 18 and 60 will no longer be granted temporary collective protection.

From now on, they must apply for asylum through the standard procedure. The new rules will take effect shortly.

The Norwegian government explained the decision by citing the significant burden on municipalities, which are facing a shortage of housing and resources.

At the same time, the restrictions will not apply to men discharged from military service, individuals with medical conditions, those evacuated under medical programs, or those who are the sole caregivers for children.

The changes will also not affect Ukrainians who have already been granted temporary collective protection status in Norway.

As a reminder, Ukraine and Norway have agreed to establish a strategic partnership.

Norway is ready to continue supporting Ukraine in the energy sector, in particular by financing gas purchases to ensure a stable supply through the coming winter months.
