Mexico’s security chief links car bombing in Zacatecas to cartel conflict
Mexico’s security chief Omar García Harfuch said that one of the main lines of investigation into the car bombing near the municipal police headquarters in Ojocaliente, Zacatecas state, is a conflict between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Pacific Cartel. This was reported by Anadolu Agency.
Version of a struggle for territories
According to García Harfuch, the August 30 explosion may have been linked to a confrontation between criminal groups seeking to control territories and drug trafficking routes in Zacatecas state. He made the statement during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s press conference in Zacatecas.
Law enforcement officers detained three people who, according to the official, are linked to the attack. Among those detained is a suspect who, according to the investigation, placed explosives in the vehicle.

Consequences of the explosion
At least 11 people were injured in the explosion. Residential buildings, vehicles and police facilities were also damaged. The attack occurred during festive events in the municipality, according to reports.
According to García Harfuch, the vehicle contained about 200 kilograms of explosives. Zacatecas, located in north-central Mexico, is of strategic importance to criminal organizations because of its connections to routes between different parts of the country.
Earlier, authorities also considered CJNG’s possible involvement in the attack due to tensions between the group and its rivals in the region. The investigation is ongoing to establish those responsible and the motive for the explosion.
