UN warns against hunting in Cyprus buffer zone — Cyprus Mail

The UN has warned hunters against hunting in the buffer zone in Cyprus, stressing that it is strictly prohibited. The organization also warned that its police will report any aggressive or dangerous behavior by hunters toward UN peacekeepers or civilians to local authorities for prompt and appropriate prosecution.

Warning during the season

The statement was issued at a time when the hunting season on the island is already underway. As Cyprus Mail reports, in July UN Secretary-General António Guterres had already drawn attention to unauthorized hunting in the buffer zone, including with the use of firearms.

According to him, such incidents continued to occur with high frequency despite repeated protests by the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus to the Republic of Cyprus.

Statement by Turkish Cypriots

In December, the so-called foreign ministry of the Turkish Cypriots stated that the Greek Cypriot administration in southern Cyprus was allegedly systematically attempting to extend its “authority” over the buffer zone, seize land there, and gain an advantage.

Among the methods it named were agricultural activity, hunting, unauthorized construction of roads across land belonging to Turkish Cypriot owners, as well as the construction of universities, cinemas, and shopping centers.
