Toxic smoke from forest fires in Canada blanketed New York ahead of the 2026 World Cup final
Toxic smoke from more than 100 wildfires raging in Canada has blanketed New York State and New York City. The incident occurred three days before the World Cup final, scheduled for July 19 at the New York-New Jersey Stadium.
Due to the spread of smoke and hazy skies, state authorities have issued warnings of critically poor air quality and peak pollution levels.
Fine particulate matter in the air can cause coughing, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fatigue in people, and can significantly worsen chronic heart and lung conditions. In light of this, U.S. experts have urged the public to limit or completely avoid outdoor physical activity. Citizens are advised to wear protective masks outdoors, keep windows closed, and use air conditioners and air purifiers to maintain clean indoor air.
