Lithuania's Interior Minister Called for Opening Fire on Illegal Migrants
Lithuanian Interior Minister Martinas Katelinas stated that Lithuanian border guards should have the right to use firearms against illegal migrants in exceptional cases.
According to him, border guards must be equipped with the means to protect the state border and their own lives if an immediate threat arises.
Katelinas emphasized that this applies only to situations where there is a danger to the lives of border guards, other people, or national security. He also mentioned hybrid threats, noting that there may be individuals among illegal migrants who pose a risk to the country.
The minister added that border guards must feel political support while performing their duties. At the same time, he stressed that any possible cases of abuse must be investigated by the competent authorities.
