US House of Representatives blocks initiative to impeach Trump

The US House of Representatives in Washington voted to block Democrats’ initiative to impeach President Donald Trump over his administration’s large-scale deportation policy. As Anadolu Agency reports, 232 lawmakers supported the proposal to table H.Res. 1486, 147 voted against it, and another 47 voted “present.”

Vote on the resolution

The resolution to impeach Trump for “high crimes and misdemeanors” was introduced by House member Al Green. Eighteen Democrats joined nearly all Republicans in supporting the tabling of the document.

Among the 47 lawmakers who voted “present” were leading House Democrats Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark, and Pete Aguilar. The previous day, Democratic leadership said it would vote this way because it believes a formal impeachment procedure should be preceded by a broader congressional investigation.
