Ghana’s Parliament backs probe into alleged 70,000 cedi payment
Ghana’s Parliament has backed an investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor into an alleged payment of 70,000 Ghanaian cedis linked to the work of Parliament’s Appointments Committee. According to MyJoyOnline, the investigation is also to establish the authenticity of a memorandum circulating on social media that allegedly concerns the return of these funds.
The authenticity of the document has not been confirmed
The memorandum was allegedly written by Deputy Minority Leader of Parliament and Asokwa MP Patricia Appiagyei. However, conflicting information has emerged regarding the document’s authenticity, while subsequent reports categorically denied that the MP was its author.
In a statement signed by Director of Media Relations David Sebastian Damoah, the Parliamentary Service said it had not independently verified the memorandum’s authenticity. Therefore, Parliament will not at this stage determine which version regarding the document’s origin is correct. At the same time, it stressed that claims about payments allegedly linked to the work of a parliamentary committee require proper verification.

Call for an investigation
The Speaker of Parliament called on the Office of the Special Prosecutor to conduct a thorough and prompt investigation, including determining whether the memorandum is genuine and whether the claims set out in it are true. Parliament pledged to cooperate with the Office of the Special Prosecutor and other competent investigative bodies.
If the document proves to be fabricated or was falsely attributed to Patricia Appiagyei, Parliament called for the Cyber Security Authority and law enforcement agencies to be involved in identifying those connected to its creation and dissemination. The public, the media, and other interested parties were also urged to exercise caution in circulating the document and not draw final conclusions until its authenticity and the circumstances of its appearance have been established.
