The Scottish Parliament has backed a new independence referendum

The Scottish Parliament has approved an initiative to hold a new referendum on independence from the United Kingdom.

Seventy-two members of parliament voted in favor of the call to London, while 55 voted against it. The motion calls for the Scottish Parliament to be granted the authority to organize the referendum.

The initiative was proposed by Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney, leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), which advocates for the region’s independence from the United Kingdom.

In early May, the SNP became the largest political force in the Scottish Parliament for the fifth consecutive time, winning 58 seats. At the time, Swinney called the election results confirmation of support for the party’s course toward independence.

Following the local elections in the UK, discussions regarding the possible breakup of the United Kingdom have intensified once again.

As a reminder, Scotland is ready to send troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping mission.

Scotland is also providing Ukraine with over 280 tons of fishing nets for protection against UAVs.
