Pashinyan has been officially appointed Prime Minister of Armenia
On August 2, Armenian President Vaagn Khachaturyan signed a decree appointing Nikol Pashinyan as the country’s prime minister.
“Pursuant to Part 1 of Article 149 of the Constitution, Nikol Pashinyan is appointed Prime Minister,” reads the decree, published on the president’s official website.
The appointment took place after the newly elected parliament, formed following the June 7 elections, began its work. According to the Armenian Constitution, the government must resign on the day of the first session of the new convocation of the National Assembly.
Earlier, Pashinyan submitted a letter of resignation for the Cabinet of Ministers to the president, which the head of state approved. Following this, the president appointed the candidate nominated by the parliamentary majority as prime minister.
Pashinyan’s candidacy for the post of head of government was put forward by his party, “Civic Contract,” which retained its majority in the National Assembly following the parliamentary elections.

As a reminder, on August 2, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the government’s resignation in connection with the start of the newly elected parliament—the 9th National Assembly—taking office.
During a phone call with Vladimir Putin, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that a referendum on the country’s accession to the European Union is possible, but only after Armenia officially submits its application for EU membership.
