Another major blackout has occurred in Cuba: the island is without power
On the evening of August 2, 2026, Cuba experienced yet another large-scale power outage. The island, with a population of about 10 million people, was left without electricity.
Cuba’s state-run power grid operator stated that the island’s power grid suffered a failure late Sunday evening, marking the latest in a series of power outages caused by Cuba’s aging infrastructure and the U.S. energy embargo.
This outage followed three nationwide power outages last month.
The state-owned utility company UNE stated that there was a “total blackout” of the national power grid, meaning that the entire country, with a population of 10 million, including the capital Havana, was plunged into darkness.
Cuba’s Ministry of Energy stated that efforts to restore the grid are already underway.
A series of blackouts on the island also affected water supply and cooling systems, making daily life extremely difficult for the country’s residents.
Cuba, which relies heavily on outdated power plants, lost access to fuel from its former main supplier—Venezuela— after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed an oil embargo on Cuba following the ouster and arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on January 3.
