Pastor Akerele says Nigeria’s church leaders face a moral crisis — Premium Times Nigeria
Nigerian pastor Ayo Akerele, in a column for Premium Times Nigeria, stated that the silence of some senior church leaders in the face of evil and corruption is weakening the moral authority of the Christian church in Nigeria. The author called on church leaders to publicly speak the truth to those in power and return to integrity and doctrinal purity.
Criticism of church silence
Akerele believes that the love of money has become one of the main reasons for the loss of spiritual courage among religious leaders. He claims that some of them may be linked to corrupt politicians, fund political parties, elections or candidates, and may also be involved in corrupt business practices.
The column does not name specific individuals or churches, and the claims presented are the author’s position. The pastor also wrote that because of such phenomena, some church figures cannot openly speak out against political arbitrariness. In his view, “silence is the natural environment of evil,” so church leaders must not remain passive.

A call for prayer and the upbringing of young people
Akerele devoted a separate part of the text to raising the next generation of Christians. In his view, pastors should systematically teach prayer, churches should hold active prayer gatherings, and parents should pray with their children and demonstrate this by their own example.
The author called on religious communities to place doctrinal purity above popularity, and on believers to compare religious teachings with Holy Scripture. He also cited Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Niemöller, Martin Luther King Jr., John MacArthur and Billy Graham as examples of figures who, in his assessment, stood against evil in their countries.
