Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that trade negotiations with the United States had become “ugly” following offensive remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump. Despite the escalating tariff dispute and new threats of tariffs, Ottawa is not halting the negotiation process with Washington.
The day before, during a speech in Las Vegas, Trump spoke harshly about the neighboring country, saying, “Canada is disgusting. That’s how they are. They’re disgusting. I love those people, but they’re disgusting. Disgusting leadership.”
In response, Carney stated that, despite the escalating rhetoric, Ottawa is continuing negotiations with Washington.
“These are difficult negotiations. You could even call them ‘nasty.’ But this is about Canadian jobs. This is about the future of Canadian business,” the prime minister said.
Carney noted that Canada is “in the midst of a tariff war” with the U.S. According to him, Canadian negotiators were working in Washington this week, and he expects further contact with Trump in the near future.
The U.S. has already imposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles. In addition, Trump has threatened to impose 50 percent tariffs on a broader list of Canadian goods starting August 19. In response, Canada has imposed its own trade restrictions, emphasizing that they are a reaction to the U.S. tariffs.
