Kenya buries man who died of Ebola, identifies 57 contacts — Anadolu Agency

In Kenya, a man who became the country’s first patient with confirmed Ebola and died from the disease has been buried. The burial took place on Wednesday at Langata Cemetery, about 7 kilometers southwest of Nairobi’s central business district, in compliance with strict anti-epidemic protocols.

Contacts

The number of people who had contact with the patient increased from 55 to 57. Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, said that 10 of them are in a quarantine facility and undergo daily symptom monitoring at the National Police Service Hospital in Nairobi.

According to the official, efforts to trace the remaining contacts have been intensified. At the time of his statement, about 17 people had been located and had already arrived at the designated location.

Case imported from the DRC

As Anadolu Agency reports, the deceased was a Kenyan citizen who lived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He fell ill there, then traveled overland through Uganda and arrived in Nairobi by air on October 3.

The man was taken to a hospital in Nairobi and isolated. Laboratory tests confirmed disease caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus, a rare severe viral hemorrhagic fever. Duale stressed that there is currently no Ebola outbreak in Kenya, and that the only confirmed case was imported from the DRC.

Since Ebola preparedness was intensified in the country, more than 652,000 travelers have been screened, 267 suspected samples have been tested, and nearly 5,000 healthcare workers have been trained in disease prevention and case management.
