Peter Magyar discussed Ukraine's accession negotiations with the EU
Hungary’s incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar held talks with representatives of the European Union. The parties discussed the prospects for opening negotiation chapters as part of Ukraine’s EU accession process.
A European Union official reported this to Suspilne. However, he did not provide details on Hungary’s position regarding the advancement of Ukraine’s EU accession.
"It was a constructive and substantive meeting ahead of Magyar’s inauguration as Hungary’s prime minister on May 9. They discussed issues of cooperation within the European Council. President Koshta briefed Magyar on various issues discussed at the informal European Council meeting in Cyprus, and they exchanged views on next steps. In particular, they discussed Ukraine, the multiannual budget, and competitiveness," our source said.
Meanwhile, Bloombergreports that Péter Magyar is seeking for Ukraine to grant the Hungarian minority more rights in exchange for approval of progress toward EU accession. The publication notes, in particular, that his demands align with the 11-point plan previously submitted by Viktor Orbán’s government.
In a comment to Suspilne, the European Commission’s press service stated that Ukraine had already adopted an Action Plan on National Minorities last year, which the EC assessed positively. “It addresses concerns raised by neighboring countries and provides a solid foundation for resolving outstanding issues. Regular monitoring of the plan’s implementation is carried out by the Commission in cooperation with Ukrainian authorities. Next steps: The Commission urges Ukraine to continue its work and implement the adopted Action Plan in a timely manner. Allowing Ukraine to continue its work within the “Fundamentals” cluster will effectively contribute to strengthening the rule of law, respect for fundamental rights, and the protection of minorities in Ukraine in line with EU standards. The Commission is ready to provide further assistance and support in this process together with the Member States,” the press service reported.
