A rainbow was spotted while firefighters were putting out the fire at the Lavra
A rainbow appeared at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which was damaged by a Russian strike on the night of June 15, while firefighters were battling the blaze. It was spotted near the damaged dome of the monastery while rescue workers continued to battle the flames.
A rainbow appeared in the sky above the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra as the aftermath of the Russian attack on Kyiv was being addressed. The unusual phenomenon was noticed just as rescue workers continued to extinguish the fire that broke out after a Russian drone struck the site.
On the night of June 14, Russia launched a massive strike on Ukraine using missiles and drones. One of the targets was the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The attack sparked a fire, and the Assumption Cathedral sustained damage. Rescue workers, police, and other emergency services arrived at the scene immediately. They began extinguishing the flames and clearing the debris.
It was during these efforts that a rainbow appeared over the sanctuary. It formed next to the damaged cross, the ruined dome, and the debris left behind by the strike. A reporter working at the scene said: “I’ve never seen such destruction before. The church’s dome is just lying in the middle of the road, and they’re still putting out the fire on top.”
In the published footage, rescuers can be seen continuing to work next to the rainbow, continuing to deal with the aftermath of the attack. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, as of this morning, the death toll in the capital has risen to five. A woman who suffered severe injuries died in the hospital. More than 30 other people were injured, including two children and a pregnant woman.
Strikes and falling debris were reported in several districts of Kyiv at once. Fires broke out and civilian infrastructure was destroyed in many places. The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra sustained significant damage. A Russian drone struck the area of the Assumption Cathedral — a landmark listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and under enhanced international protection in accordance with the Second Protocol to the 1954 Hague Convention.
Aid centers were also set up in the capital for residents whose homes were damaged by the shelling. Despite the extensive destruction, rescue workers managed to contain the fire and prevent even greater losses. And footage of a rainbow over the damaged shrine quickly spread across social media and caught the attention of many Ukrainians.
According to eyewitnesses, the rainbow appeared just as smoke was still rising above the Lavra, and firefighters continued to work on the temple’s roof and among the debris left behind by the Russian strike. This was reported by TSN.
