Ali Khamenei's funeral will be held in two countries

Iranian authorities have announced that multi-day funeral ceremonies will be held for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who, according to reports, was killed on February 28 during the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran. The mourning events will take place from July 3 to July 9 in Iran and Iraq.

The funeral procession will pass through Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, as well as the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.

In this way, the Iranian authorities are turning Khamenei’s funeral into a large-scale national and regional event.

An official ceremony attended by foreign leaders and high-ranking officials is scheduled for July 3 in Tehran. A public viewing will take place on July 4 and 5, and a funeral procession will pass through the capital on July 6.

On July 7, mourning events will take place in Qom, and on July 8, in the holy Shiite cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq. The ceremonies will conclude on July 9 in Mashhad, Khamenei’s hometown.

The Supreme Leader is scheduled to be buried in the Imam Reza Shrine—one of the main centers of Shia pilgrimage.

According to media reports, the prolonged delay in holding the funeral has raised questions about the situation surrounding Khamenei’s successor and drawn criticism from opponents of the Iranian government. They suggest that the Iranian government is seeking to ensure the largest possible turnout for the mourning ceremonies.

Meanwhile, Iraq has already confirmed that processions will take place in Najaf and Karbala, and local organizers have begun accrediting journalists to cover the ceremonies.

CNN reports this.

Earlier, Iran officially announced the schedule for the state funeral and farewell ceremonies for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which will take place from July 4 to July 9. The official funeral processions will begin in the capital, Tehran, and conclude on July 9 with the leader’s burial in his hometown of Mashhad, within the sacred complex of the Imam Reza Shrine.

As a reminder, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in strikes by the U.S. and Israel, will be buried in the holy city of Mashhad.

As a reminder, several Western news agencies reported that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s body was found under the rubble of his residence.

The Israeli military has published a list of high-ranking Iranian officials who, according to them, were killed in the airstrikes on February 28.
