Lithuanian border guards will help Latvia combat illegal migration from Belarus — Delfi
Lithuania has decided to provide support to Latvia in combating illegal migration originating from Belarus and has sent its specialists to strengthen border security.
According to the report, nine Lithuanian border guards will begin carrying out their duties on the Latvian section of the border as early as July 1.
A group of Lithuanian specialists traveled to the neighboring country in official vehicles, carrying the necessary equipment and standard-issue weapons.
They will focus on monitoring the border, preventing illegal border crossings, and implementing other security measures along the most vulnerable sections of the border.
The mission is scheduled to last two weeks.
Further continuation of this cooperation will depend on how the operational situation at the border develops, as the situation remains quite tense and requires coordinated action by both countries.
It is worth noting that Latvia has recently been facing unprecedented pressure due to illegal migration originating from Belarus.
Since the beginning of this year, 6,681 attempts at illegal entry have been recorded, with migrants being promptly stopped or returned to Belarus.
Statistical data indicate a significant escalation of the security problem, as the flow of secondary illegal migration from Latvia has increased 4.3-fold compared to the first half of last year.
This trend requires countries in the region to join forces to effectively protect the European Union’s external borders.
