Australian police find 3.5 grams of methamphetamine in a McMuffin sandwich
Western Australia Police have charged a 39-year-old man after finding about 3.5 grams of methamphetamine during a search of his car. According to law enforcement, the substance was hidden between the bacon and egg in a McDonald's McMuffin sandwich.
The arrest took place on Sunday in the town of Broome as part of an investigation into the buying and selling of illicit drugs. As Global News Canada reports, Senior Constable Ben Lucas described the details of the case on the WA Police Confidential podcast.
Discovery in the car
According to Lucas, officers found a bag containing fresh food from the Chicken Treat chain in the vehicle. At the bottom of the bag was a cold, discarded McMuffin sandwich, which drew the officers' attention. When they unwrapped it, they found a sealed bag containing methamphetamine inside.
Body-camera footage released by Western Australia Police on Facebook shows officers inspecting a paper fast-food bag and finding the sandwich. There appeared to be a bite mark on its exterior.

Charges and court
The man was charged with possessing drugs with intent to sell or supply them. His next appearance before a magistrates' court is scheduled for September 9.
Police also detained a woman who was in the vehicle. She was released after questioning. Lucas said the discovery came as a surprise to those involved in the search.
According to the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, methamphetamine use in Australia has doubled over the past decade. The commission estimates that the country ranks second in the world in consumption of the substance after the United States; the indicators are tracked, in particular, through wastewater monitoring results.
