An explosion rocked a train station in Germany amid threats from Russia to close its consulate
On the morning of September 2, an unknown object exploded near the main train station in Augsburg, Bavaria. Several people were injured as a result of the incident.
According to preliminary reports, the explosion occurred shortly after 5:00 a.m. in a passageway of one of the buildings near Augsburg’s main train station.
Following the incident, law enforcement officers cordoned off part of the area and launched a large-scale operation.
It is believed that the victims may have suffered acoustic trauma due to the loud sound of the explosion. The exact number of victims has not yet been disclosed.
The blast wave also damaged windows in nearby buildings. Information regarding other possible damage is being verified.
Due to the explosion, traffic in the area of Augsburg’s main train station has been temporarily restricted.
Part of the area around the station has been cordoned off, and traffic on Track 1 has been temporarily restricted. Trains are being rerouted to other tracks.
At the same time, passengers can use the north and south entrances to the station.
The cause of the explosion and all circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.
The incident in Augsburg occurred amid a sharp escalation in diplomatic tensions between Germany and Russia.
The day before, on September 1, the German government accused Russia of being responsible for an attempted drone attack carrying explosives on the Leipzig/Halle Airport.
Following this, Berlin announced the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the termination of the agreement regarding the “Russian House” in Berlin.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful also summoned the Russian ambassador.
At the same time, German police have not yet reported any link between the explosion in Augsburg and terrorist activity, foreign interference, or a diplomatic conflict with Russia. The causes of the incident are under investigation.
