Police of British bases in Cyprus launch operation against illegal hunting
The police of the British bases in Cyprus have announced the launch of Operation Hunter, aimed at combating illegal hunting, poaching and unlawful training of hunting dogs. As Cyprus Mail reports, the operation is being conducted jointly with the bases administration’s environmental department, the police of the Republic of Cyprus and the game service.
Measures during the hunting season
The police noted that the Dhekelia station had issued guidance on the risks and possible penalties for violations of the law during the hunting season. Particular attention will be paid to illegal bird trapping and the training of hunting dogs in places where it is prohibited.
Law enforcement officers will conduct targeted patrols and intelligence-led operations. Drones, surveillance equipment, body-worn video cameras and automatic number plate recognition systems are planned to be used for monitoring and enforcing the law.

Reporting suspicious activity
Police reminded hunters of the need to hold the relevant licences and comply with designated hunting dates and locations. They also stressed the need to safeguard people, protect wildlife and prevent damage to private property.
Akrotiri police operations chief Tony Demetriou stated that law enforcement officers would respond firmly to poaching, illegal dog training and other actions posing a risk to people, wildlife or property. He called on the public to report suspicious activity, including shooting in prohibited areas, pursuing animals with vehicles, illegal dog training or possible poaching.
According to Demetriou, each report will be assessed in light of the available information and the established level of risk.
