Peace Council condemns clashes between students of two schools
The National Peace Council has condemned violent clashes between students of Okuapeman and Mount Sinai senior high schools in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region. Ten students were arrested in connection with the clashes, MyJoyOnline reports.
Call to investigate the causes
Janet Sarni-Kuma, Director of Capacity Development and Engagement at the National Peace Council, said that the long-standing rivalry between the schools, including in sports, cannot justify violence or arson. In her view, there may be other factors behind the conflict beyond school rivalry.
Sarni-Kuma called for an investigation to determine the root causes of the clashes. She also said that people who deliberately took part in the violence should be held accountable if their involvement is established.

Damage to school property
The Peace Council representative expressed concern over the destruction of school property. She stressed that educational institutions are already under pressure due to the growing number of students following the introduction of the Free SHS free senior high school programme.
According to Sarni-Kuma, the consequences of damage to educational infrastructure will be felt by students who study there in the future. The Peace Council said it intends to begin mediation between the schools after tensions ease.
The case is then planned to be referred to the Council's relevant department dealing with conflicts and to the Executive Secretary for the Eastern Region. The Council noted that settlement requires resources and cooperation from school administrations, students, parents, traditional leaders, security services and other stakeholders.
