Miller’s Thumb restaurant in Cape Town marks its 30th anniversary
The Miller’s Thumb seafood restaurant in Cape Town’s City Bowl district has been operating for 30 years. The establishment opened in 1996. Solly and Jane Solomon, known as Jolly ’n Sane, have welcomed guests for many years: Solly prepares the dishes, while Jane introduces visitors to the menu, Daily Maverick reports.
The publication’s author, who frequently visited the restaurant from 1996 to 2014, returned there for the first time after moving away from Cape Town. According to his observations, the familiar orange-and-green decor elements have remained, and Jane continues to talk about the regular menu items and that evening’s specials.
Seafood menu
Miller’s Thumb offers fresh catch that can be grilled with lemon, olive oil and oregano. Cajun and Moroccan cooking options are also available. Calamari is served using similar recipes, while prawns are prepared with olive oil, lemon, ginger, chilli and garlic.

The menu still includes Yaki Soba with chicken, prawns, cashews, crunchy vegetables and noodles in a ginger-soy sauce. The review’s author chose Chilli con pesce, a dish with assorted seafood, chorizo and red pinto beans. It is served with cheddar, prawns, jalapeños and fresh coriander.
Dishes and dessert
The order also included Spanish-style chicken livers with cream, sherry and sweet paprika, grilled calamari with Cajun spices, and Bengali fish curry. For dessert, the author tried marzipan ice cream.
The publication notes that the author and his wife paid for their dinner in full. After returning, he wrote that Miller’s Thumb is worth visiting again.
