Polish lawmaker criticized over photo showing a fish she caught

Polish lawmaker Izabela Bodnar found herself at the center of a high-profile scandal after posting a photo from her vacation in Spain. In the photo, she is posing next to two large tuna that were caught while fishing. The post quickly sparked a wave of criticism, and the discussion went far beyond the photo itself.

Izabela Bodnar, a member of the Polish Sejm from the Unia Centrum party, posted a photo on social media from her vacation in Spain. In the photo, she is standing next to two large tuna caught during a sea fishing trip. The post appeared on the eve of the World Cup final. The politician wished the Spanish national team “the same success as we had catching tuna during our Spanish vacation.”

It was this very post that sparked a storm of reactions from users. In just the first 15 hours after the post appeared on social media platform X, over 1,100 comments were left under it. Most of them were critical.

Polsat News journalist Agnieszka Gozdira reacted sharply to the photo. “How little style and empathy must one have to not only take such a photo but also post it?” she said.

In response, Izabela Bodnar called this reaction hypocritical. According to her, the people who criticize her for fishing regularly eat fish themselves. “Every piece of sushi, every fish, or every fish cutlet comes from an animal that was killed or caught,” the lawmaker noted.

She also added that those who are outraged by her actions should switch to a vegetarian diet. In her opinion, only then can one consistently condemn such photos. However, critics drew attention not only to the fishing itself.

Journalist Agnieszka Gozdira pointed out that as far back as October 2023, Bodnar had openly supported the organization “Open Cages,” which works to protect animal rights and welfare. That is precisely why many users saw her current post as contradicting her previous stance.

Other public figures also joined the discussion. Columnist Jan Szpewak commented ironically on the situation, saying, “Apparently, the wealthy in Poland really do pay too little in taxes.”

Journalist and columnist Jakub Wech also weighed in on the matter. He jokingly proposed a “guide for politicians,” in which he advised against posting photos from expensive vacations abroad—which are out of reach for most citizens—and also suggested avoiding photos featuring dead animals. Despite the wave of criticism, Izabela Bodnar has not changed her position. She continues to insist that she sees nothing wrong with the photo and considers the accusations against her to be unfounded.

The story quickly became one of the most talked-about topics on Polish social media. The discussion went far beyond fishing itself and touched on the topics of politicians’ public behavior, the display of luxurious vacations, and the consistency of their views.
