Poland plans to raise taxes on alcohol and sugar to support healthcare
The Polish government plans to increase excise taxes on alcoholic beverages and sugar to raise additional funds to finance the healthcare system, which is facing a funding shortfall.
According to the draft law, the excise tax on alcohol could rise by 15% in 2027, which would generate approximately 1.8 billion zlotys for the budget each year. The Polish Ministry of Finance is also proposing to raise taxes on popular small bottles of alcohol and products with high sugar content.
Authorities estimate that over the next ten years, these changes could bring in approximately 18 billion zlotys for the state.
The initiative was prompted by a budget deficit in Poland’s National Health Fund, estimated at approximately 20 billion zlotys. Due to a lack of funding, the country has already begun restricting certain medical services.
