UN envoy calls for inclusive political process in Sudan
UN envoy to Sudan Pekka Haavisto, during talks in Khartoum, called for advancing an inclusive and strategic political process aimed at ending the conflict in the country. He met with the commander of the Sudanese army and chairman of the Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

According to a statement by the Sovereign Council, the sides discussed the situation in Sudan, efforts to strengthen security and stability, and prospects for comprehensive peace. Haavisto said he had conveyed important messages regarding de-escalation and the protection of civilians, Anadolu Agency reports.
The envoy also expressed hope that further talks could lead to an exchange of prisoners and detained civilians between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). According to him, dialogue is the path to sustainable peace.

International mechanism
The UN will work with Sudanese parties and partners in a five-member mechanism to advance a political process that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people. The mechanism includes the UN, the African Union, the European Union, the League of Arab States, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Haavisto arrived in Sudan on Friday for talks with relevant parties on de-escalation and the protection of civilians. On August 30, the Preparatory Committee for Dialogue in Sudan launched an independent initiative to facilitate consultations and seek a path toward ending the war and achieving broader national consensus. The war between the army and the RSF has continued since April 2023; according to estimates by the UN and international organizations, it has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced about 13 million people.
