Fires, an earthquake, and mammoth remains: the week in photos on France 24

Forest fires in Europe, an earthquake in Japan, migrants attempting to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, and mammoth remains in Bulgaria were featured in France 24’s weekly photo roundup.

On the Greek island of Crete, a fire engulfed an area near the village of Asomatos on July 30. Two firefighters died while battling the wildfire. That same week, rescue workers tried to bring a field fire near the town of Ares in southwestern France under control.

A powerful earthquake in southwestern Japan on July 28 claimed the lives of 34 people. Among the victims were people who died as a result of the collapse of the Aeon Mall Kumamoto shopping center in Kashima, Kumamoto Prefecture.

Near the Moroccan city of Fnideq, tens of thousands of migrants attempted to cross the border into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta during clashes with Moroccan security forces, but later returned home. In Bulgaria, record-low water levels in the Danube exposed the remains of an ancient mammoth near the village of Ryakhovo. Experts discovered a jawbone, fragments of tusks, part of a shoulder blade, and a femur.

The selection also includes photos of smoke rising over downtown Kyiv following a missile strike by Russia—the aggressor state—on August 1, and of Zinedine Zidane during his presentation as the new head coach of the French national team.
