Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin arrived in Kyiv
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin arrived in Kyiv on Thursday, where he plans to hold meetings with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi, and Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk.
According to “Ukrainska Pravda,” citing “European Pravda,” which in turn quotes the Irish Examiner, Martin will visit the Verkhovna Rada during his visit. He is expected to discuss Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations and its domestic reform plan with Stefanchuk. The Irish prime minister will also meet with Serhiy Koretskyi, who took office last week.
The itinerary includes visits to civilian areas of Kyiv damaged by recent attacks by the Russian Federation—the aggressor state. Martin will also hold meetings with representatives of international organizations and charitable foundations that, with Irish funding, are assisting those affected, as well as with representatives of the Irish community in Kyiv.
On the eve of the visit, the Irish Prime Minister stated that he is making this trip at the start of his country’s EU presidency “to underscore the unwavering solidarity of the EU and Ireland with the government and people of Ukraine.” According to him, support for Ukraine is a priority of Ireland’s EU presidency.
Martin noted that the trip would allow him to learn directly from Zelenskyy and Koretskyy about the situation on the ground and the needs of the Ukrainian government. The visit comes three weeks after Zelenskyy’s trip to Dublin to mark the start of Ireland’s EU presidency.
