Latvian Prime Minister Says Some EU Countries Are Profiting from the War in Ukraine — Reuters
Some European Union countries are reaping significant profits amid the Russia-Ukraine war, said Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs. According to him, some of them continue to provide economic support to the Russian war machine.
He emphasized that this situation requires attention from European partners, as the profits of certain states may contradict the EU’s common policy of putting pressure on Russia.
Kulbergs makes no secret of his outrage that some EU member states are blocking the new 21st package of sanctions against Russia. This primarily refers to Bulgaria and Greece.
In his view, vetoing certain parts of the package amounts to complicity in the deaths of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians.
Moreover, the Latvian prime minister emphasized that inaction regarding Russia’s “shadow fleet” and its LNG sales fuels the “Russian war machine.”
“In addition, some (European—ed.) countries are making huge amounts of money off of this. The question is, do you want to make money, or do you want peace? You can’t have both at the same time,” Kulbergs said.
This was stated by Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, as reported by Reuters.
As a reminder, the President of Latvia warned of a possible new escalation by Russia against NATO.
Latvia, together with Ukraine, will build a drone manufacturing plant near the border with Russia.
The Latvian Ministry of Defense will deploy additional air defense systems in the near future to strengthen the protection of the country’s eastern border.
Latvia also intends to continue enhanced monitoring along its eastern border.
