Pakistan’s prime minister calls for keeping Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb open — Dawn

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, speaking at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States, said that the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb must remain open. As Dawn reports, he called these routes arteries of the global economy and condemned the recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Call for diplomacy

Sharif said that the conflict in the Persian Gulf region and the Middle East had caused human losses, economic hardship and pressure on critical maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, amid the use of missiles, drones and artillery, the voice of diplomacy must sound even stronger.

The prime minister stressed that the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb should connect countries rather than become centers of confrontation.

Talks in Islamabad

According to Sharif, Pakistan organized talks in Islamabad between Washington and Tehran. He linked them to the signing in June by the United States and Iran of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

Sharif also noted the role of Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in this process.
