Taiwan’s Premier Makes First Unofficial Visit to Japan Since 1972
Taiwan’s Premier, Cho Jung-tai, undertook a personal trip to Tokyo, marking the first visit by the head of the self-governing democracy to Japan since diplomatic relations were severed between Taipei and Tokyo in 1972. He attended a baseball game between Taiwan and the Czech Republic to show support for the Taiwanese team, emphasizing that the visit was a private initiative.
Cho stated that he covered all expenses himself and that the trip had no official purpose beyond supporting the team. The visit carries significant symbolic value given the long absence of formal diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Such unofficial visits may become a way to maintain informal relations between Taiwan and Japan in the future, despite the lack of official diplomatic recognition.
