BRICS leaders in New Delhi adopt declaration calling for UN reform
BRICS leaders at the summit in New Delhi, India, adopted the New Delhi Declaration. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that consensus had been reached on Saturday, NDTV World reports.
Reform of international institutions
The declaration calls for the reform of multilateral institutions, including a “structural overhaul” of the UN Security Council. The document also contains a strong condemnation of terrorism.
Modi said that a changing world cannot be governed through outdated institutions, and that reforms are needed in representation, responsiveness and rule-making. According to him, summit participants also stressed the need for equal participation by Global South countries in the development of future technologies and in shaping rules for their use.

Trade and shipping
The declaration envisages that trade within BRICS should increasingly be conducted in local currencies rather than US dollars. The document also condemns unilateral acts of war and emphasizes the need to ensure the safety of seafarers and commercial shipping amid ongoing military aggression in the Middle East.
Modi welcomed the summit participants, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, the president of the aggressor state Russia. The Indian prime minister said that the adopted declaration sets the direction for the joint efforts of the member countries, and that its provisions must be translated into concrete results.
