Hungarian Prime Minister Initiates Constitutional Amendment to Restart the Country's Government

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced the launch of a process that could lead to a change in the country’s political system and the removal of President Tamás Szujok. This involves an initiative to amend the constitution, followed by a referendum and new elections for the head of state. According to the government, the president has refused to step down voluntarily.

Hungary is entering a period of serious political tension, with the standoff between the government and the president shifting to the legal and constitutional arena. Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated in parliament that he is initiating amendments to the country’s Fundamental Law, which are intended to launch a process to review the president’s powers and effectively pave the way for his removal.

According to the government’s plan, once the amendments are adopted, a broader constitutional process involving the public is to begin. These changes will then be put to a nationwide vote—that is, a referendum—in which citizens will be asked to approve or reject the new model of government. Following the possible approval of the revised constitution, the parliament—the National Assembly—will elect a new head of state. Thus, this is not a one-time decision, but a complete overhaul of the procedure for establishing presidential authority.

Péter Magyar himself has publicly stated that the current president, Tamás Szujók, is allegedly acting as a “puppet” of Viktor Orbán’s political camp and does not serve the country’s interests. Szujok himself, according to the prime minister, refused to step down voluntarily, which served as the formal pretext for initiating the reform process. The situation remains politically sensitive at this time, as any constitutional amendments in Hungary require a complex process of approval and public legitimization through a referendum. The Speaker of the Polish Sejm suggested that Zelenskyy might not come to Gdańsk

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman announced that he had returned the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, which he received in 2011 for promoting regional cooperation between Ukrainian and Polish cities.

On June 20, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko also announced that he was renouncing a Polish state order, emphasizing that this step was not directed against the Polish people; at the same time, he also made critical remarks about incumbent President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Earlier, Zelenskyy had sent Navrotsky the Order of the White Eagle via Nova Poshta.

Following this, Leonid Kuchma declined the Polish Order of the White Eagle.

Ukraine’s third president, Viktor Yushchenko, also declined the Polish Order of the White Eagle.

In addition, Borys Tarasyuk will return his Polish order due to Navrotsky’s policies.
