Labour's Andy Burnham will run for the office of British prime minister

Andy Burnham, the newly elected Labour Party member of the British Parliament, has officially announced his intention to run for the office of prime minister. The announcement came amid the decision by the current head of government, Keir Starmer, to resign following prolonged internal party pressure due to falling approval ratings.

Burnam thanked Starmer for his leadership during a difficult period and emphasized the importance of ensuring that the transition of power takes place in an orderly and responsible manner to maintain stability in the country.

Previously, the 56-year-old politician served as mayor of Greater Manchester for nine years and also held the position of Secretary of State for Health in Gordon Brown’s government. The candidate for prime minister has now stated that the new administration’s top priorities will be tackling the cost-of-living crisis, stimulating economic growth, and modernizing public services.

He announced this in a post on social media platform X.

According to reports, Keir Starmer announced his resignation on June 22. The decision came amid a political crisis in the United Kingdom, which intensified after local elections in which the Labour Party lost a significant number of seats and control of the Welsh Assembly.

After the elections, some MPs and members of the government publicly called for Starmer’s resignation, which heightened domestic political tensions in the country.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer informed staff at his office of his final decision to resign.

Within the UK Labour Party, talk has intensified about a possible leadership change and the potential resignation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is considered the leading contender to replace him.

The British Foreign Secretary has called on Starmer to resign.
