A Wehrmacht motorcycle and the remains of soldiers were found in Budapest after the Danube receded
Due to record-low water levels in the Danube in Budapest, artifacts from World War II that were previously submerged have become accessible. A Wehrmacht military motorcycle, the remains of two soldiers, ammunition, and other historical items were discovered at the bottom of the river.
The finds will help researchers learn more about the events of the war and the combat operations that took place in this area.
As noted, the exhumation was carried out with the participation of German and Hungarian experts. The remains of the two soldiers were well-preserved thanks to the unique conditions at the bottom of the river.
Numerous German Tellermine 35 anti-tank mines, which were used during World War II, were found alongside the remains. According to experts, the silt near Bátthyány Square was mixed with diesel fuel, which created favorable conditions for the preservation of human remains, metal objects, and documents.
The soldiers’ identification tags proved to be a particularly valuable find. They remained fully legible, and both halves of the tags were preserved together. Typically, in the event of a soldier’s death, one half was sent to the Wehrmacht’s information bureau, which could then notify the relatives.
After the necessary examinations are conducted, the remains are scheduled to be reburied at the Budayors cemetery near Budapest.
In addition, staff from the Institute and Museum of Military History recovered a military motorcycle from the bottom of the Danube, which, according to preliminary estimates, is a DKW NZ 350-1 model. During the war, this model was considered one of the most reliable in the German army.
Other finds include a military medal from World War II and a can of gasoline. Experts estimate that all these items have lain at the bottom of the Danube for nearly 80 years.

The Danube has receded so much that the ship’s wreckage has become visible above the water.
