Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan have formed a new defense alliance
Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan have signed a mutual defense agreement stipulating that an attack on one of the countries will be considered an act of aggression against all members of the alliance.
The document was signed in Mecca in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Negotiations on the agreement lasted about a year.
The participants stated that the alliance is defensive in nature, aimed at strengthening collective security and deterring potential aggression. At the same time, they emphasized that it is not directed against any specific state and remains open to other countries joining.
The signing of the agreement took place against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East and security concerns regarding shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Combined, the armed forces of the three countries number about 1.2 million service members, are equipped with about 4,000 tanks and more than 700 combat aircraft, and their total defense spending amounts to about $125 billion per year.
