Icelandic Prime Minister Kristurun Frostadottir stated that Greenland belongs to its people, who do not wish to become part of the United States. She also emphasized the importance of unity among NATO allies in the face of the Russian threat.

According to Frostadóttir, the people of Greenland have clearly expressed their position regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s territorial claims.

“We have always been very clear on this: Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland, and they do not want to be part of the United States… Greenland belongs to its people, but the same applies to Iceland and others,” the prime minister said.

At the same time, she emphasized that unity among allies is currently the most important thing for NATO.

“We face external threats, and Russia is the greatest threat to the Alliance,” Frostadóttir noted.

The Icelandic prime minister also expressed hope that the U.S. and Denmark would be able to reach a mutual understanding during the closed-door talks currently underway between the parties.

The Icelandic prime minister made these remarks to journalists ahead of the plenary session of the NATO summit, according to “European Truth.”

As a reminder, the Danish prime minister responded to Trump: “We are ready to defend our land.”

U.S. President Donald Trump’s initial remarks at the NATO summit in Ankara caused concern among allies and forced them to reassess their expectations for the meeting. Despite hopes for a constructive dialogue, the atmosphere at the summit quickly changed following the American leader’s controversial remarks.
