The President of Finland stated that Europe has not yet decided on its relations with Russia
European leaders who are considering the possibility of dialogue with Russia have not yet reached an agreement on who exactly should take charge of communications with Moscow. This was stated by the President of Finland while commenting on possible diplomatic contacts between European countries and Russia.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb made this statement in an interview with the Corriere della Sera.
Stubb noted that it is time for European governments to establish a dialogue with Moscow, but he does not know when this will happen.
“If U.S. policy toward Russia and Ukraine does not serve Europe’s interests, as I see it, then we must intervene directly. Yes, it is time to begin negotiations with Russia,” Stubb said.
“We have discussed with European leaders who will establish contact, but we don’t know yet,” he added.
The Finnish leader called it extremely important that everything be coordinated between the E5 countries (Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Poland) and the Nordic and Baltic countries. "Whether it will be a special envoy or a group of leaders—we’ll see," he added.
The EU must negotiate with Russia on its own — Stubb.
