Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed support for Palestinians during a large Islamic gathering and said that the situation in the Gaza Strip causes him deep pain. This was reported by the Jerusalem Post.
The speech took place at an official reception marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Gontor Islamic boarding school in eastern Indonesia. Subianto said that he remembers the Palestinians, who, according to him, are subjected to continuous attacks and bombardments. He also said that it seems impossible to help them.
Call for the country’s independence
The president called on young people and religious leaders to strengthen Indonesia’s independence. According to him, this should enable the country to support oppressed peoples in different parts of the world and not submit to the instructions of foreign states.

Previous statements about Israel
Subianto’s current rhetoric differs from his address to the UN General Assembly in 2025. At that time, he said that achieving genuine peace in the Middle East required recognizing, respecting and guaranteeing Israel’s security.
After that, reports emerged that Indonesia was considering steps toward normalizing relations with Israel, including as part of its accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry denied that normalizing relations with Israel was a condition for joining the organization.
In February, at the inaugural meeting of the “Board of Peace” in Washington, Subianto announced his intention to send about 8,000 Indonesian military personnel to the Gaza Strip as the main peacekeeping force. In March, the Indonesian government said that the deployment had been suspended indefinitely due to regional escalation.
