The President of Latvia confirmed that the downed drone was Ukrainian
Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs confirmed that the drone, which flew in from Russian territory and crashed in Latvia, belonged to Ukraine.
The Latvian president’s statement was reported by Delfi.
According to him, information about the incident was received in a timely manner—around 4 a.m.—which allowed for a prompt assessment of the situation. Rinkēvičs noted that the drone was part of an operation coordinated by Ukraine against targets on Russian territory.
The president emphasized that the incident once again demonstrated the importance of strengthening air defense, especially along the border, and that Latvia must focus on developing an effective and cost-efficient system for neutralizing drones.
He added that he does not yet consider it necessary to convene an extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council and stressed the need to continue working on strengthening the country’s air defense.
Earlier reports indicated that Latvia had detected a violation of its airspace by a foreign drone, which, according to preliminary data, had flown in from Russian territory.
Latvia’s Defense Minister Andris Spruds decided to immediately end his visit to Ukraine and return home.
