Lithuanian President Accepts Ruginiene's Government's Resignation — LRT

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has officially accepted the resignation of the Cabinet of Ministers led by Inga Ruginienė

The president’s decision is linked to a major reshuffling of the current parliamentary coalition

The head of state has already appointed Ruginiene as interim prime minister, who will serve in that capacity until a new government is formed.

Political changes in the country are taking place amid preparations for the appointment of a new head of the executive branch.

As early as Wednesday, the Lithuanian leader plans to hold an official meeting with the leading candidate for the post of prime minister—Social Democratic Party leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius.

The president is expected to submit his nomination to parliament for consideration this coming Thursday.

Under the republic’s current legislation, the procedure for forming a new government has strict time limits.

Following a successful vote in the Seimas, the prime minister-designate will have just over two weeks to form his cabinet.

The politician must agree on the list of ministers with the head of state and then present a plan for the government’s work to parliament.

“If approved, Sinkevičius must present the composition and program of the government within 15 days, in consultation with the president, after which the Seimas will vote to approve the new government,” the statement said.
