Lithuania to Introduce Compensation for Damages Caused by Air Defense Systems Targeting Drones
The Lithuanian Seimas has approved legislative changes that will establish a compensation mechanism for citizens and companies in the event of property damage resulting from the operation of air defense systems during the shooting down of drones.
The new regulations provide for compensation for damage caused during the lawful use of weapons by the Lithuanian military or NATO allies. For the mechanism to be fully implemented, the bill must pass one more vote in parliament.
The system is expected to take effect as early as August 2026. Both individuals and legal entities will be eligible to receive payments, and in certain cases, compensation may be paid out over a period of ten years.
The need for these changes stems from incidents in the Baltic states, where drones en route to targets in Russia lost their course due to electronic warfare and crossed the borders of neighboring countries.
