The ex-husband of Scotland's former prime minister was sentenced to prison
Peter Murrell, the former executive director of the Scottish National Party (SNP), was sentenced to more than five years in prison after pleading guilty to embezzling party funds.
The court found that Murrell had illegally spent more than 400,000 pounds sterling (approximately 540,000 U.S. dollars) from the party’s budget. According to the investigation, the funds were used to purchase cars, luxury items, and other personal expenses.
On June 23, the Edinburgh High Court sentenced Murrell to 5 years and 3 months in prison. He pleaded guilty to the crime last month.
Judge Andrew Young emphasized that the sentence should serve as a warning to others who have access to the financial resources of political organizations.
Murrell is the ex-husband of former SNP leader and former First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon. She resigned in 2023 amid an investigation into the party’s finances but was later acquitted of the charges against her.
Following the court’s decision, Sturgeon stated that she was unaware of and had no suspicion regarding the use of party funds for personal purposes.
Murrell was first arrested in April 2023 as part of Operation Branchform—an investigation into the SNP’s financial activities. In 2024, he was formally charged with embezzlement.
The case has become one of the most high-profile political scandals in Scotland in recent years and has raised a number of uncomfortable questions about the financial transparency of one of the country’s leading political parties.
