Polish President Nawrocki to attend G20 despite putin invitation — Notes from Poland

Polish President Karol Nawrocki plans to attend the G20 summit in the United States, although he does not approve of the invitation extended to russian aggressor-state leader vladimir putin. This was stated by Marcin Przydacz, head of the Polish president’s Bureau of International Policy, Notes from Poland reports.

Poland was invited to the summit as a guest rather than a full G20 member. According to Przydacz, Warsaw should be represented at the meeting because it serves its interests. Nawrocki also intends to use the summit to advance Poland’s aspiration to become a permanent member of the group.

Poland’s position

In an interview with Wirtualna Polska, Przydacz said that the Polish side does not approve of the decision by the administration of US President Donald Trump to invite putin. At the same time, he stressed that Poland should not determine the composition of the summit’s participants, as Russia is a founding state of the G20.

According to Nawrocki’s representative, Poland supports Russia’s isolation at all international venues. If putin actually plans to attend the summit rather than merely having an invitation, Warsaw will discuss this with its European and Euro-Atlantic allies.

Summit in Miami

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this week that Trump had invited putin to the summit. The event is set to take place in December at a golf resort in Miami owned by Trump. Rubio explained the invitation as an opportunity for the russian leader to engage with other world leaders.

putin has not personally attended G20 summits since 2019. As the outlet notes, this was initially prevented by the COVID-19 pandemic and later by the consequences of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for him. The United States is not a party to the ICC, so the warrant does not apply on US territory.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski previously said that inviting putin should have been made conditional on a ceasefire in Ukraine. Przydacz also said that, in his opinion, there would be no personal contacts between Nawrocki and putin during the summit.
