The President of Romania has promised a proportionate response following the incident involving a Russian drone

Bucharest has responded to the crash of a Russian drone on its territory. The President of Romania stated that the country would deliver a “proportionate response” following the incident involving the Russian drone, which caused damage to civilian infrastructure.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan posted an angry comment on social media after a Russian drone struck a high-rise building and stated that he would “take appropriate measures.” According to The Guardian, he also convened a meeting of the National Security Council this morning to discuss a response. Separately, Romania summoned the Russian ambassador.

“What happened today in Galați is a direct consequence of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, Moscow’s irresponsible and indiscriminate use of these weapons systems in close proximity to NATO borders, as well as its systematic disregard for international law. There is no ambiguity regarding the perpetrator or the cause of this aggression,” he stated.

The country’s president also emphasized that Romania is a member of NATO and will under no circumstances allow the aggressive war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine to be extended to its citizens.

Romania has also summoned the Russian ambassador. The government has already informed its allies and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte of the incident.

“We will officially announce what consequences this irresponsibility on the part of the Russian Federation will have for diplomatic relations between our countries, as well as the next steps at the European level regarding sanctions packages,” Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Cioiu stated on X.

She called the incident “an extremely serious and irresponsible escalation.”

The EU announced its intention to increase pressure on Moscow following the incident in Romania. This refers to a Russian drone crashing into a residential building, resulting in civilian casualties. The European Union emphasized the need to intensify sanctions and political pressure on Russia.

During the Russian strike on the Odesa region on April 25, Russian drones were moving along the border with Romania. British aircraft patrolling Romanian airspace tracked their routes. Later, drone debris was found in border areas of Romania.

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador over the incident involving a drone crash near the city of Galați.
