President Xi Jinping to arrive in India for BRICS summit — Channel NewsAsia
Chinese President Xi Jinping will arrive in New Delhi, India, on September 12 for a two-day BRICS summit. According to Channel NewsAsia, the meeting of 11 states will include, among others, the leaders of India, the aggressor state Russia, and Iran. The main topics expected at the summit include the wars in the Middle East and the aggressor state Russia's war against Ukraine, instability in global trade, and energy security.
Xi and Modi talks
Xi Jinping is expected to hold in-person talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This will be the Chinese leader's first visit to India since 2019 and another step in the gradual improvement of bilateral contacts following a deadly clash between military personnel on the disputed border in 2020. Since then, the sides have resumed air connections, visa issuance, and high-level contacts.
At the same time, the territorial dispute between the two nuclear powers remains unresolved. Both sides maintain a significant military presence along the approximately 3,500-kilometre high-altitude border in the Tibet region. Beijing said it is ready to strengthen communication and cooperation with India, as well as properly manage differences.

Differences within BRICS
On the eve of the summit, Modi held talks with President of the aggressor state Russia Vladimir Putin, who is one of New Delhi's key strategic partners. According to the outlet, India partly addressed its energy crisis by turning to Russia, despite its war against Ukraine and pressure from Washington and other Western capitals.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who also arrived in New Delhi, said that pressure on his country had reached a critical and dangerous stage following the military aggression of the United States and Israel. United Arab Emirates President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi are also expected to arrive for the summit.
Brazil will be represented by Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, as President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is campaigning ahead of the October elections. In May, BRICS foreign ministers failed to agree on a joint statement at a meeting in New Delhi.
