President Tinubu attends premiere of film about Abiola in Lagos — Premium Times Nigeria
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu attended the national premiere of the documentary film MKO about the life and political legacy of businessman and politician Moshood Abiola. The screening took place on 1 October at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in the Iganmu area of Lagos as part of celebrations marking the 66th anniversary of Nigeria's independence, Premium Times Nigeria reports.
Tinubu was the chief host of the premiere and arrived at the event with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. Those present also included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the President's Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Ogun and Kwara State Governors Dapo Abiodun and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, as well as other officials.
A film about the 1993 election
The film tells the story of Abiola's life, political career and legacy, paying particular attention to the presidential election of 12 June 1993, its annulment by the military authorities and the subsequent pro-democracy movement. The documentary also covers Abiola's detention and the circumstances of his death in 1998.

The film's director and producer, Nigerian-American filmmaker Ose Oyamendan, said that Tinubu was among those who demanded recognition of the mandate won in the election during military rule. Tinubu also appears in the film in the context of his participation in the pro-democracy movement.
Archives and testimonies from participants in the events
The 108-minute work combines archival materials with testimonies from people connected with the events of that time. The film's subjects include former military leaders Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel Prize laureate Wole Soyinka, and Baba Gana Kingibe, who was Abiola's running mate in the 1993 election.
The international premiere of MKO took place on 12 June at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival in the United Kingdom. From 2 October, the film is to be shown in cinemas in Nigeria, with Nile Entertainment handling its distribution in the country.
