Greenland's prosperity depends on Trump, says U.S. Special Envoy Jeff Landry

Greenland's prosperity depends on Trump, says U.S. Special Envoy Jeff Landry

U.S. Special Envoy to Greenland Jeff Landry stated that the country’s economic future and prosperity allegedly depend to a large extent on the decisions of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Landry made these remarks in an interview with DR.

Landry said that during his trip to Greenland, he held meetings with a wide range of local representatives and called this part of “building friendly relations” between the U.S. and the region.

He noted that, in his view, some of his interlocutors expressed a desire to strengthen ties with the United States.

“You can never have too many friends, right? So the mission to build friendly relations never ends…,” Landry said.

The envoy also stated that he intends to brief Donald Trump on the strategic importance of the region and on the fact that, in his opinion, it was Trump who “put Greenland on the map” back in 2016.

“I’ll tell him that Greenland’s prosperity depends on him—on the decisions he makes…,” said Jeff Landry.

According to him, this is because Greenland is of strategic importance to the U.S. and the Western Hemisphere.

Landry’s remarks effectively underscore Washington’s view of Greenland’s geopolitical role, which is seen as a key element in security and influence in the Arctic region.

U.S. Special Envoy Jeff Landry arrived in Greenland on May 18. He stated that the purpose of the trip was to establish contacts, communicate with local residents, and familiarize himself with the situation on the ground, denying any political motives related to possible plans for the island.

As a reminder, Trump announced further troop reductions in Germany.

NATO stated that it remains confident in its defense capabilities following the U.S. decision to withdraw some troops from Germany. The Alliance says this is a signal for Europe to invest more in its own security.

As a reminder, the Pentagon has decided to withdraw approximately 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany. The process is planned to be carried out over the next six to twelve months. This is part of a review of U.S. force deployments in Europe.

Berlin acknowledges that the continent will have to strengthen its own defense more quickly and more seriously to compensate for the gradual reduction of the American presence.
