Putin signed a law imposing prison terms for denying the genocide of the Soviet people

Russia has introduced criminal liability for denying or endorsing the so-called "genocide of the Soviet people" during World War II.

Putin signed the corresponding law.

The document also provides for punishment for “insulting the memory of victims” and desecrating military graves and memorials.

The changes were made to the article on “rehabilitation of Nazism.” Denying the “genocide” is punishable by a fine of up to 3 million rubles, forced labor, or imprisonment for up to three years.

Separately, liability for damaging or desecrating graves and memorials has been increased—the maximum penalty is up to five years in prison.

As a reminder, the Kremlin stated that despite the pause in negotiations, it continues to maintain contact with the U.S.

Putin’s approval rating has also plummeted due to increased censorship in Russia.
